Find your tribe. I did.

Haters are gonna hate, and cynics are gonna be cynical. But since I joined Space, my wife will tell you the same thing: I’ve found a much greater sense of purpose and a genuine sense of hope that I’ve seen with my own eyes. And what’s top of the tree? Space is the best community I’ve ever been part of.

Not because we’ve got all the answers. Not because life suddenly becomes easy. But because there’s something powerful about finding somewhere you can turn up as yourself, feel welcome and know you belong.

From Getting Through the Week to Looking Forward to Life

One of the greatest privileges of being part of Space is seeing what can happen when a man no longer feels he has to face everything on his own. To see lads go from wondering how they’re going to get through the week to talking about what comes next, from simply existing to beginning to live again, is something that never loses its meaning.

It’s not about some overnight transformation or pretending everything suddenly becomes perfect. Life still happens. There are setbacks, difficult days and moments when old feelings come back. But sometimes, you begin to notice a change. A lad starts looking forward to the next walk, the next group, the next conversation. He begins to reconnect with people, find a sense of purpose and see possibilities where, before, he might only have seen problems.

That’s the real value of Space. Not promising to fix anyone, but creating a place where connection, trust and encouragement can help people growth, and where that growth has the chance to last. To witness a man move from just getting through life to genuinely looking forward to living it is an absolute privilege. That’s what we do it for.

The Mask We Learn to Wear

You can be surrounded by people and still feel completely out of the loop. You can go to graft, put on ya mask, make everyone laugh and say, “I’m alright,” while carrying more than anyone realises. After a while, you forget you’re wearing one.

Sometimes, the hardest part isn’t knowing you’re struggling. It’s finding somewhere you feel comfortable enough to say it out loud without the fear of judgement or being treated differently. You might not know what to say, or where to start. You might just be tired of pretending everything is alright when it isn’t. And sometimes, you don’t need someone to fix everything. You just need somewhere you can be yourself without having to explain or justify how you’re feeling.

Why Space Exists: Connection Starts Small

Space is built on a simple belief: talking helps, and human connection is a necessity. We all need to feel heard, understood and have a space to belong. You don’t have to arrive ready for a deep conversation. You don’t have to share your life story or sit in a circle talking about your feelings. Sometimes, the first step is as simple as joining our Saturday morning walk from Fausto’s at Roker, or our Sunday morning walk at Backhouse Park. No expectations. Just a bit of craic. Our boxing can help channel stress and rebuild confidence. Yoga can help you slow down, breathe and find a bit of calm.

Sometimes, the way forward starts with doing something you enjoy alongside people you trust. Connection doesn’t always begin with talking about mental health. Sometimes, it begins by doing something together. You turn up for a walk. You have a coffee. You share a laugh. You get to know people at your own pace. And somewhere along the way, a group of people you didn’t know can become people you’re glad to see.

No referral. No waiting about. No justifiable reasons required. No rehearsed explanation. No pressure to have the right words. Just rock up as you are.

There’s No Magic Fix

A walk won’t cure depression. A coffee won’t solve everything. We know that. But having somewhere to go, people who know your name and a community where you feel accepted can make a real difference. At Space, you can laugh, listen, talk rubbish or talk about what really matters. You can have a good day, a bad day or one of those days when you don’t really know how you’re feeling. You don’t have to share everything. You don’t have to pretend.

You matter. And if life has left you feeling like you don’t, you can begin to unlearn that. The aim isn’t to make every problem disappear. It’s to help men build connections, rebuild confidence and find a way forward, to start learning to live again, not just get through the day.

Behind Every Number Is a Person

Since 2022, Space has provided more than 300 hours of free support and reached over 500 men. Behind every number is a person. A story. A life that matters. Those figures represent people with their own experiences, challenges, hopes and reasons for turning up. Every person has their own journey, and nobody needs to have everything figured out before they become part of the community.

Space is about hope, purpose and community. It’s about finding your people and discovering that life can hold more than survival, and knowing you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

Your Invitation: Just Rock Up

If you’ve been thinking about coming along, this is your invitation. Bring a mate or a family member if that makes it easier. Or come on your own. You don’t need the right words. You don’t need to wait until things get worse. Just rock up.

Change takes time. Everyone’s journey looks different, and you don’t have to figure everything out at once. You don’t need to become a different person overnight. Sometimes, the biggest change begins with a small decision to give yourself a chance.

There’s a line from “Closing Time” by Semisonic, written by Dan Wilson, that feels fitting here (although some claim Seneca): “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”

Sometimes, the first step is small. Sometimes, it’s simply walking through a door and giving something a chance.

Is this your one day, or day one?
