Working with Sunderland AFC on World Mental Health Day

Our first major media coverage, and a lot of new faces afterwards.

Space and Sunderland AFC: Talking Makes a Difference

A boyhood dream

For our founder James Fildes, this one was personal. He’s supported Sunderland since he was a lad. So standing in front of the first team, talking about Space and the men we support, was a dream come true.

“I grew up watching this club from the stands since I was 5 years old. Standing in front of the squad, telling them about the men we support, is something I’ll never forget.”

Premier League players, real conversations

We spoke to Premier League footballers from all different backgrounds about what we do: free support for men, six days a week, and why talking makes a difference.

Different countries. Different upbringings. Same message. Men need somewhere to talk.

Backed by the club

Having Sunderland AFC endorse Space was a huge moment for us. When a club that means this much to this city stands behind your work, men listen. It tells a lad who’s struggling that asking for help isn’t weakness.

Snow outside, warmth inside

We spent the whole morning out in the snow and the freezing cold. Nobody cared. The conversations between the players, the club staff and our team kept everyone warm.

Together Against Suicide

We’re delighted to be working with Sunderland AFC once more this year as part of the Premier League’s Together Against Suicide campaign, alongside Washington Mind and the Foundation of Light.

This World Mental Health Day, the message is the same as it was on that freezing morning. Talking makes a difference.

If you’re a man in the North East and you need somewhere to talk, we’re here six days a week.

If you’re struggling right now, you can call Samaritans free, any time, on 116 123.
